Hope is the physician of each misery. ~Irish Proverb
We kick off new years with hope in our hearts,
Promising ourselves this one will be fine.
But always there remain the unseen darts
From the previous year that made us whine.
Shrug off past misery; try a new line;
This is the time for a fresh burst of hope!
We’ve more than shown that we’re able to cope.
As new growth springs from the cold ground below,
Don’t look for someone to throw you a rope.
You can do this. Just go with what you know.
Note: Happy 2021! This poetry form is Dizain, a style 15th and 16th Century French poets were fond of. It consists of one 10-line stanza, with 10 syllables per line in an ababbccdcd rhyming scheme.
Perfect message for the new year, Debbie! After last year, I’m sure we’re all hoping that any surprises this year holds are good ones. Happy New Year (again)!
Thanks so very much, FF — it’s grand to be back. I missed everybody, but I must confess, I got a LOT of things done that were on my To-Do List. Happy 2021 to you, too!
A good way to start the new year! We certainly do hope that 2021 is a better year than 2020 was.
Nicely said, Laurie. I refuse to say what I was thinking (that the new year can’t be any worse!) We all know that’s just tempting Fate, don’t we?!?
We surely do!
Debbie, so perceptive! You share a lot of truth in this piece. I particularly like this…”Don’t look for someone to throw you a rope. You can do this. Just go with what you know.”
As we move into a new year, we’re all relieved to be leaving the previous year behind. But as you said, “But always there remain the unseen darts.”
My feelings about 2021 are extremely hopeful, but I also realize that it will come with some hurdles (darts) as well. But we will get through it because I think 2020 made us all stronger and more resilient.
Happy New Year, my friend! I love the photograph of the clover.
Have a terrific Sunday and week!
X
I’m counting on being stronger and more resilient this coming year, Ron. It kind of feels like we’ve all been dragged senseless by stampeding bulls, doesn’t it? But at least we can cling to Hope and without that, this old world would be a pretty bleak place indeed!
I’m so glad you liked my clover! It’s growing very near where my tiny Christmas tree is, so that must be a good spot. We’ll see what pops up when Spring gets here!
Happy new week to you! xx
I feel sorry for people who really believe that we’re going to get a clean slate for 2021. There are a lot of lingering issues that are going to affect us, and they’re going to have to be dealt with. But as you point out, starting with a fresh attitude — and maybe a clean mental slate — can help us cope. We’ll certainly hope so! Happy New Year!
I’m not trying to be Pollyanna here, as I’m sure you know! Sure, just turning over a new calendar page doesn’t grant us instant immunity from the pains and scars of the previous 365 days; however, if we can’t look to the future with Hope in our hearts, we might as well go play in traffic along I-10, right?!!
Or try to get through DFW with only ten minutes to spare!
Been there, done that — and it wasn’t fun!!
A super poem for the new year, Debbie. Happy New Year.
Thanks very much, John. And thanks for being my blogging friend. Life is so much more fun when you’ve got wonderful friends to share it with!
Love this. Happy & Healthy New Year Debbie! 🌿🕛💏💕
Cindy, I’m glad you enjoyed it. Thanks very much for stopping by. A most happy and healthy new year to you and yours!
I like your analogy relating the new growth to the new year. Although a few months will feel like 2020, we can only hope 2021 will be better. Meanwhile, I can’t remember what I wrote the first time. 😉
Bless your heart, Frank, I’ve done that before, too, and it’s frustrating. Yes, I suspect we’ll be suffering some of 2020’s misery for a while — until things start to come together. Fingers crossed, we can get out from under this situation and back to what people are calling a new normal. Thanks for letting me know about the gnomes — hope they find another place to wreak havoc!
Hooray … thanks you for rescuing me from the dungeon of the WP gnomes. They are so sneaky!
Glad to do it — your presence here is most welcome, Frank!!
🙂
Love your positive message, Debbie! ❤
Thank you, Eliza. I try to be optimistic and uplifting when I can.
“HOPE!” A word for 2021! Happy New Year!
Thank you, Tanya. “Hope” is a great word for any time, but especially after the misery that was 2020. Happy New Year to you and yours!
Happy New Year to you too! I pray for safety and good health for you and your family.
I love your message here, Debbie! We can do this! We can overcome the challenges we’ve been forced to face in the past year. And I’m always impressed with your ability to create poetry in so many styles. 🙂
Aw, gee, Tee, your praise is making me blush!! Glad you liked this one and found it relevant. 2020 was bad enough, but I’ve heard a lot of people complain that 2021’s not moving up to the speed they’d hoped for (slow vaccines and even slower drop to the virus statistics!)
I’m not going to pass judgement on 2021 yet. I’m not sure how well I could handle a repeat of last year! 😬
I think we’re all in that boat!!
Well said!! We need to be reminded that we absolutely can make the new year a good one, despite whatever challenges it happens to bring. Happy New Year!!!
Happy New Year to you and yours, Ann! It’s nice to start the calendar with optimism. Way better than expecting the other shoe to drop, huh?!!
Debbie, love your timely poem of hope. Here’s to many “fresh bursts of hope” in 2021! HaPpY New Year to you!
Thanks very much, Virginia. Happy New Year to you and yours as well — hope springs eternal and all that!
Happy New Year, Debbie. I still will not let go my faith nor my optimism that this year will be the best yet. Not easy to do in light of everything that is going on. Just keep your light shining and hang on to God. Much love to you! xo
Thank you for much-needed, loving words, Amy! Optimism seems to be in short supply these days, but I’m clinging to it!
It most certainly is in short supply and I so encourage you to hang on tight. I refuse to bend my knee to evil or despair in any form. You can too, Debbie. I’ve got you in my heart!! xo
Thank you — I’ll pray for you, too, my friend!
Lovely poem❤️. Hope 2021 will bring happiness for all of us.
Thanks for dropping by to read it — glad you enjoyed it!
