Among these kinds of beauty the eye takes most delight in colours. ~Joseph Addison, English essayist, poet, playwright, and politician
According to Feng Shui (the Chinese art of placement using energy forces to harmonize with environment), your front door is one of the most important areas of your home, representing the face you show the world.
Before a recent walk with Monkey, I would have guessed most front doors in my community were neutral colors. But I’d have been wrong.
Now it seems there’s an explosion of color possibilities for front doors, all designed to boost a home’s curb appeal while making an impression on visitors.
Who knew?
So let’s take a look at some of the doors Monk and I found.
1. A nice shade of dark green:
2. A peachy-keen Turquoise. Perhaps the owners had leftover paint and decided to slap some on the bench as well?
3. A muted shade of red (for Feng Shui good luck):
4. Basic wood, probably stained though:
5. A really deep charcoal gray that almost looks navy blue:
6.Another pretty shade of blue (the overhanging porch makes it look like two different colors, but it’s really just a medium blue):
7. Getting back to the basics in white:
8. Helloooooo, Barbie:
9. True navy (though paint experts would probably call it “marine” blue!):
10. I’m guessing this color is Cream. Or perhaps Bisque, or Almond, or some such:
11. A pale shade of aqua — I can almost hear the waves at the beach and smell the salt air!
12. Is this Cranberry? Or Maroon? Or Garnet? Well, it’s red anyway:
There you have it. By the way, if you see weird white markings, your eyes aren’t deceiving you. I’m trying to protect the owners’ identities by camouflaging house numbers and such.
So, did you find a favorite? What color is your front door? Have I prompted you to undertake a DIY project and paint it a different color? What color would you choose? Do tell!

Debbie, LOVED this post! I don’t know if you remember, but years ago, I published a series of photographs on my blog with the theme “doors”. Like you, they fascinate me. As well as windows.
Years ago, I studied (by reading books) about Feng Shui and found it to be very true. To me, it’s all about ENERGY. And colors give off various energy.
Love your selection of doors here! I think my faves are the turquoise, the blue, and of course, being someone who likes the color pink, the pink door. And yes, VERY Barbie.
Living in an apartment building, all of our door are painting the same – white. A few years ago the property manager had all the doors (which were made of wood), replaced by metal doors (for more security). The other doors (and locks) were getting tattered and very worn. With so many apartments in this building (250), it took a whole year to replace all the doors. They did it floor by floor.
FUN post, my friend! Have a super Sunday! X
Ron, I’m glad you enjoyed this one. Perhaps colored doors are a “thing” in modern times? I can’t recall any particular colors on front doors of my friends’ houses when I was a kid — other than traditional wood or white, I mean.
My front door is white and faces west, which, I believe, is good according to Feng Shui. Frankly, that color just “goes” with the appearance of the house as a whole. I suspect any other color might stick out too much!
Have a wonderful week! xx
My favorites are the blues. Our door is a mustard color, which ties in with the color of our roof. Would like to repaint the door—it’s been over 20 years—but with one thing or another, I never seem to get to it.
I know what you mean, Laurie. When I consider all the things on my To-Do List, painting the front door is way down there! And frankly, the white color presently there fits the house as a whole anyway.
My favorite is #3, that muted shade of red. The Barbie pink is ghastly.
You have reminded me of one of my favorite real-life stories with your post. I was at Home Depot a few years ago, waiting my turn at the paint counter. The woman next to me had a newly painted house — a lovely dove gray — and she wanted an eggplant-colored front door.
In fact, she was holding an eggplant: the actual veggie. She gave it to the clerk, who scanned it with the computer to get the color right. When the paint was mixed and shown to the woman, she said, “That’s perfect!” Then, she took her paint and her eggplant and left.
Sometimes I love technology.
“Ghastly” is a good description, Linda. I like pink once in a while, but I can’t see it as a front door color. Maybe the owners have daughters? Or maybe they just felt like climbing aboard the Barbie Train?!
I’m still giggling over your story about the eggplant. I know some of those “big box” stores are able to match paints from something you bring in. And they have a bazillion color swatches that a shopper can get quite lost in. But an eggplant? Well, to each his (or her) own, right? Still, I wouldn’t have thought purple and gray would be very appealing!
You did a great job covering numbers. I never noticed till you mentioned it. I like the charcoal. Maybe because mine is black.
Thanks, John. Not that anybody would care to identify these homes, but I like to err on the side of caution. I suspect black goes well with your style of house.
It does. We have a black garage door and black accents.
Interesting post, Debbie… front doors are creative expressions of their owners, I reckon. Mine is plain white… I tend to express my creativity in flowers rather than real estate! 😉
Good point! Ours is plain white, too, which seems to go well with the brick exterior. I’m disappointed in my flowers this year though. I had high hopes for them at the beginning of the season, but the weather just hasn’t cooperated one bit!
I love doors and gates and I love this post! I really like most of these, but would probably pick the medium blue (or dark blue) as my favorite.
I live in a rural area where lots of folks rarely use their front doors. Everyone comes to the side/carport door. All of our doors are painted the same color: green!
Thanks, Kelly — I’m glad you liked it! Our area is pretty rural, too, so I get what you’re saying about not using the front door. That’s kind of reserved for “company” (though Monk and I regularly seem to use it for our walks!
Lovely variety! I fear all our doors and windows are mahogany brown woodstain – it’s part of our neighbourhood’s rules that we all have the same colour paintwork. It does make things look harmonious, but doesn’t allow for much individual personality!
Interesting that you all adhere to the same color scheme. I suspect many neighborhoods like that for its unity, and I can see where it would be nice not to have to ponder changes — or try to “one-up” your neighbors! But gee, I’d hate to have to buy a special can of colored paint just to fancy-up the front door.
I notice 3 of the doors have circle signs on the door or near the door. Are round signs a thing in your area of the country?
I’m not sure what circle-things you mean. But yes, a lot of front doors have “Welcome” signs or seasonal wreaths, so maybe that is a thing? And some of these circles look to be etched within the glass door that accompanies the colored front door. Lots of different styles here!
I think that you were very respectful to cover the address numbers Debbie. Very mindful.
While others don’t appreciate the Pink Door it is my favorite. I suspect the door was Pink prior to the Barbie Movie. Pink can represent many things from cancer survivors, women’s power, females only and many more. I never thought of Barbie when seeing a pink front door. I also love the cut etched glass of the door which is quite girly. It is inspiring me to paint my new front door and front fake shutters the same shade of pink for Senior Single Woman with Power. Yorkie is a senior woman too and approves. We will see. Limited funds and so much to do with moving I don’t know for sure.
Old house for Sale door is Farm Fresh Green, new construction house door is French Blue which I like very much wonder the meaning of French blue doors and shutters and high rise downtown senior living facility that I’m currently renting is an interior front door wood painted drab brown.
This is a jun post Debbie!
*fun post
I’m glad you like the pink door, TD. It seems that pink is one of those colors you either love or hate — not much middle ground there. And I think you’re right in saying this door was pink long before the Barbie movie came out. I don’t know the people who live there, so I can’t say what they were thinking by painting their door pink!
You’re in the process of moving? Lots of work involved in such an undertaking, but what a good opportunity to get rid of things you don’t need while surrounding yourself with things you love!
Yes, Debbie I’m in the process of moving. As you know I was hospitalized in January and was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Disease. I didn’t think that I would ever be able to walk again after the 12 days of hospital ICU. I gave my oldest brother power of attorney which he and his wife the put me into this senior living facility independent living. After a month my brother resigned and the power of all decisions, debts and so forth fall upon me. I placed my old house on the market for sale and placed a contingent offer on a new construction house.
My sale of the old house and purchase of the new construction fell through and Thursday I am moving back into my old house.
I has been and is a lot of stress!
Even though blue is my favorite color for some reason I liked both of the red door shades. My front door is black. Now I do wonder what color I’d choose if I had a choice! We’re renting now and before this our condo association decided what color our front door was — white. Hmmm… Enjoyed comparing the door colors in your neighborhood!
Thank you, Barbara. I was pleasantly surprised at the variety!
