Thankful Thursday (4)

Pink is not just a color. It’s an attitude. ~Miley Cyrus, American singer, songwriter, and actress

At last I’m seeing

A bloom from my Cosmos plant.

Wasn’t it worth the wait?

Note: This is my contribution to the Thankful Thursday series, wherein we focus on things we’re grateful for. This Cosmos plant (also known as the Mexican aster) came in a seed packet somebody sent my mom just after she passed. I didn’t think it would grow, but just look at it — it’s nearly waist high! I guess I shouldn’t have doubted — Cosmos is one of the October birth month flowers, and Mom’s birthday was in October.

    • Frank, it does seem to follow the sun — good call!! I’m glad I was able to make you smile with my background story. Our departed loved ones live on in our hearts, don’t they?!

  1. Debbie, I never knew what those flowers were called because I’ve seen then in several of our city parks (both in pink and white), and thought they were so beautiful. And LARGE.

Loved that quote from Miley! I think you may already know this, but pink (and green) in combo are my favorite colors.

Have a fabulous rest of your week, my friend! Hope you’re enjoying the cooler weather! X

    • You know, Ron, Cosmos comes in orange, purple, red, and white, in addition to pink, so it offers a lot of variety. I’ve never tried growing them (and really didn’t expect the seeds to sprout), so I’ve had to do a bit of research on how to keep it looking pretty. So far, so good!

Isn’t that a great quote by Miley? One could say the same thing about other colors, I imagine.

We’ve had the most gorgeous weather — clear and cool, with practically no humidity! I wish we could bottle it and save it, but nobody’s figured out how. And they’re already warning us that a miserably hot and muggy system is headed our way from Texas, arriving by this weekend. Ugh, I’m NOT looking forward to that. XX

  2. This is interesting. The only cosmos I’ve seen have been yellow. I didn’t know there were pink cosmos until a reader from South Africa showed them; they’ve become naturalized there. I did some looking around, and learned we have one native cosmos species in Texas, and — it’s pink!

    • Linda, I can hardly believe it’s actually growing, but its stems are nearly waist-high! I’ve got a couple more buds ready to burst, though, and I’m really looking forward to seeing it in bloom. I haven’t done much babying of it, and maybe that’s key. It seems to do just fine, regardless of soil and weather conditions. Best of all, it attracts pollinators like bees and butterflies, and it should last until first frost!

    • Wonderful idea, Laurie! Thank you. Mom wasn’t a “pink person,” but she did love flowers. I like to think she had a hand in seeing these seeds sprout and bloom!

    • Dawn, I’m sorry yours aren’t blooming yet, but I have no clue why. I’m really a novice at growing Cosmos. In fact, I was ready to yank these things up ages ago when all I was seeing was green — but I researched on my phone’s plant app and learned it was Cosmos, so I let it live. Boy, am I glad I did! Here’s hoping you’ll see flowers soon, too!

  4. Absolutely beautiful! I love the pink!! What a wonderful way to have your mother become part of your precious garden. Do these tolerate full sun most of the day? I have always wanted to throw those seeds along my back fence line corner. Thankful Thursday to you 🌸
