I would rather sit on a pumpkin and have it all to myself than be crowded on a velvet cushion. ~Henry David Thoreau (American poet, essayist, philosopher), “Economy,” Walden: Or, Life in the Woods, 1854
I chanced to see this big pumpkin sitting on its vine while Monkey and I were outside walking one day, and immediately there sprang to mind a story.
Back when my son Domer was a little boy, the preschool teachers taught his class a wonderful Halloween tale. The kids loved it, and Domer remembered it word for word, bringing it home to share with me.
In case you haven’t heard it, or perhaps have forgotten it, I’m happy to pass it along. Only takes about five minutes, but it feels appropriate for the season. Enjoy!

Debbie, as you know, I LOVE pumpkins! In fact, at the start of fall, I purchase 8 baby pumpkins and place them all around my apartment, just so I could look at them. Also, pumpkin pie is my all-time favorite pie. So, I’m surprised that I never knew of “Big Pumpkin”!?!?
I can’t tell how much I enjoyed watching the video clip you shared. I watched it twice!
So, thanks, my friend! And Happy Halloween!

P.S. Great photo capture of the pumpkin!
HaHa, Ron, I *know* you love pumpkins! I do, too. I thought about visiting another pumpkin farm this season, but decided against it. Maybe next year.
Isn’t that a cute story for little ones? I imagine it was published after our childhoods. It certainly was a favorite of Domer’s — he could recite it front to back.
This pumpkin was in a patch beside a house Monk and I passed. The patch was HUGE, and it was all I could do to restrain myself from acting like Linus (of Peanuts fame), sitting in the middle of it, and waiting for The Great Pumpkin to rise, ha!! xx
Pumpkins are one of the sights of the season! …. Happy Halloween …. and with a touch of changing weather coming through, stay warm.
We’re expecting a freeze tonight and tomorrow, Frank, so the trick-or-treaters will have to be bundled up against the elements. Happy Halloween to you and yours!
Also here. YUK!
I’ve never heard of this story, but I watched the whole thing and got quite a kick out of it. It’s one of the best “Halloweeny” things I’ve come across. It reminds me of the days when Halloween was pure fun, mostly for kids, and witches and ghosts and vampires and mummys weren’t scary at all!
(Now, I want pumpkin pie.)
I’m glad you enjoyed it, Linda. I couldn’t help watching it several times, too — and remembering how Domer used to sing the entire tale, cover to cover. And you’re so right: Halloween used to be such a fun holiday … before so much meanness and madness took over. I don’t remember adults ever getting involved, either, other than to hand out the treats!
That’s just adorable. I smiled through the whole thing. LOVE the illustrations too.
I’m grinning over your comment, Dawn — thank you! I’m happy it brought a smile to your face. I loved watching the Charlie Brown Halloween show, and I’ll bet Big Pumpkin becomes a classic in its time, too. Of course, it’s much shorter, but still.
What a cute, catchy video! I’ve never heard that story before. I’ve sent it along for my 4 year old grandson to enjoy. Thanks!
Kelly, I’ll bet your grandson will LOVE Big Pumpkin! The catchy tune, the cute pictures, and the helpful message make it a favorite. I’m glad I was able to introduce it to you!
That was so cute, Debbie! I never heard that story. Now, I want pumpkin pie!!! Thank you for sharing it with us on this Halloween Eve. What a wonderful sighting you and Monkey had on a walk!! Love it all!!!
Yum, I’d LOVE some pumpkin pie, too! Isn’t that the cutest story? I’d almost forgotten about it until Monk and I saw that huge pumpkin. Of course, the tune kind of sticks with you, but not in an annoying way. This patch had so many pumpkins, I wanted to give them all a hug!
Where were you to see the pumpkin patch? Was this on your usual neighborhood walk?
Such a cute story that I shared it with 4 of my friends. Sharing the Big Pumpkin love!
Thank you for sharing such a cute story! Well, yes, this pumpkin patch was on one of the many routes I take Monk every day. I like to vary things up so he can read all the pee-mail, ha! Funny, but he wasn’t too interested in all those big pumpkins.
Pee-mail! That’s funny!!
Happy Halloween! 👻 👽 🧙 🧛 🦇 🦉 🕷 🕸 🍬 🍭
Happy Halloween, Cindy! Love your little spooky icons!
Fun story… happy Halloween!
Glad you enjoyed it, Eliza — Happy Halloween!
Thanks for sharing!! Pumpkin patches are lovely. They always make me think of Linus sitting in his pumpkin patch on Halloween, waiting for the Great Pumpkin to arrive….
Me, too, Ann. This one was smaller than the commercial farms, but the pumpkins were HUGE! Happy Halloween!
