There once was a bug with red eyes.
Below ground it grows and lies.
It sheds its shell
On a tree it does dwell.
After mating, the cycle will reprise.
Note: Poetry form is Limerick.

I love your limerick and your photo!! Cicadas can be great fun (in small doses).
Thanks, Kelly. I haven’t heard them yet, but seeing these outer shells tells me the noise will be along soon.
Debbie, I don’t think I’ve ever seen these bugs (Cicadas) in the city. However, what we do get in DROVES, are Stink Bugs. You’ll be walking down the street during the summer months and they will fly at you. And not just one or two, more like FIVE.
Great photo! Great limerick!
Happy Monday, my friend! X
Ooh, I don’t like stink bugs! I found one on my Jade plant the other day, carried the entire plant outside, and blew the nasty thing off. I don’t see where it did any damage, but I don’t know how it got in.
Glad you enjoyed my poem. It’s been a while since I tried writing a limerick, and it was harder than I remember. I’m going to have to write more poetry so I can stay in shape, ha!
Enjoy your week, my friend! xx
Loved your limerick. Ours have not yet arrived. I’m sure that will change quickly.
Thanks, John. I was kind of surprised to see the outer shells since I haven’t noticed the noise. Maybe the air conditioning is drowning that out?!?
That is strange. Well they sure are there.
Ugh! Not even poetry can make bugs bearable! Happily we don’t have these ones. 😀
I know, right? They give me the creeps, too. I suppose bugs lived on earth before people did, but that doesn’t make them any more appealing. I can’t fathom having one fly onto me. It’s bad enough knowing they’re out there and seeing those empty shells.
Why empty shells? Do they turn into something else, or are the shells just left over when they die off?
Apparently, they go through a shedding of their outer “skin” before developing into their adult form. This article — https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Periodical_cicadas — will tell you more than you probably want to know!
Ugh! I know bugs are supposed to be useful but why do they have to be so creepy-crawly??
🙂 ❤
Thanks for dropping by, Eliza!
Love all of it!
I’m glad you did, Cindy. Thanks so much for telling me!
Love your limerick! Seeing those empty nymph shells is just the beginning. The noise will pick up gradually over the next couple of weeks. I wonder what Monkey will think when he encounters “a bug with red eyes…”
Our newscasters keep telling us about the loud noise these bugs make, but I haven’t noticed it yet. Typically, the chirping doesn’t get wound up until June or July, when the temperature ups and downs settle a bit. I, too, will be interested to see what Monkey thinks of them … as long as I can keep him from eating everything he sees!
They’re here! Luckily Finn doesn’t eat them. But our yard is full of them. I don’t mind the noise…reminds me of summer….but the smell is a whole other story!
I’m rather surprised the noise isn’t louder, especially after the news reports warning us that it would be. Probably it’s been too wet for them to really get going. And I’ve been fortunate that Monk has left them alone thus far — here’s hoping he continues to do so!
I love cicadas: or, to be more precise, I love the noise. I wondered if you were in the part of the country that’s going to get two broods emerging at once, but apparently not. That’s ok. There will be noise enough as it is. I like your limerick, and I agree completely with your thought that you should begin writing more poetry to keep in practice. So should I, for that matter! Maybe I’ll write a limerick for the heat that’s building down here!
With as much yakking about them as our news folks have done, I’d have thought we were in for an invasion! But so far, so good. I’ve seen a few, heard a few, and managed to avoid having them fly into me as I’ve been out and about — all good. Yes, we must write more poetry so we can keep in shape!
These guys creep me out.
Me too, especially when they fly at me or try to get indoors!
