Mother’s Day 2025

Mother, have you ever thought, dear,
That some day our lives must part,
And the fated one must linger—
Linger here with broken heart?
~W. Dayton Wegefarth (1885–1973)
, American writer

When my neighbor moved in next door, she transplanted some luscious phlox to the fence line in our backyards.

But apparently, phlox doesn’t recognize a barrier, and it’s spread onto my side of the fence. Not that I’m complaining!

I think it’s delightful how this plant is sharing its beauty with both of us.

In fact, I like to think of it as my late mom’s doing. She tried, but never could get phlox to grow when she was on earth; now that she’s in Heaven, I’ll just bet she’s smiling!

Note: Happy Mother’s Day, everyone!

    • The phlox is pretty, isn’t it? I’ve seen some in pink, but this lilac is especially nice. I’ve never tried to grow it, but since it’s spreading to my side of the fence, why bother, ha?!!

Debbie, yes, I’m absolutely sure she’s in Heaven, smiling! And definitely HER doing.

I’ve seen phlox here in our city parks, but never knew what they were called. Thanks to YOU, I now know. I love the shape (and color) of the petals. My friend Kelly and I went out to the burbs yesterday, just to get out of the city for a day, and saw so many gorgeous Spring flowers.

Happy Mother’s Day to you, my friend! And to all the mothers in the world!

    • I’m glad you liked it, Ron. Phlox comes in several different colors (white, pink, blue, red, etc.). Some varieties are annual; others come up every year. I think my neighbor’s batch is perennial because I never saw her having to replant it. And it looks like it’s spread nicely since she moved in, too.

I’m glad you and Kelly got to enjoy the Burbs — and more Spring flowers! That’s such a fun thing to do on a nice weekend when you don’t have to work. Tell her Hi for me! XX

    • I can just imagine her smiling over that! She always told me I was the one with the green thumb. I don’t know why I never tried growing phlox for her (I guess I was afraid I, too, would fail!)

  2. That phlox is gorgeous! I always take comfort in the thought of our loved ones smiling down at us. 😊

    • Me, too, Kelly. This is only my second Mother’s Day without her, but her spirit sometimes presents itself very vividly to me. I suspect that’s so at this time of year because she loved it so.

  3. Nature has a way of ignoring boundaries, and in this case it’s to your benefit. That’s a lovely phlox, and whether your mother’s responsible for its spread, I’m sure she’s enjoying it — just like you!

    • Linda, I really do enjoy good plants that spread across boundary lines. After all, some are spread by birds; others, just kind of extend their reach. It’s those nasty mulberry trees I can’t stand — and I’ve got a couple of them growing huge. They’ll need to be taken out. I’ve tried using loping shears to whittle them down, but they’re such fast and determined growers that I can’t keep up with them.

    • Thank you, FF! It’s hard to believe my mm has been gone for two Mother’s Days now. She’d have surely enjoyed seeing this phlox spreading along the fence line, though!

      • Thank you, I did have a nice Mother’s Day. We had a cold front move through over Saturday night making a beautiful Sunday morning. Yorkie and I enjoyed our backyard patio and I made a video of a male Cardinal singing us a love song.

And we ended our lovely day watching American Idol that I watch with via text messaging with a friend who lives in NM. All the contestants are very talented this year though I do have my favorites! Do you watch the show?

        • No, that’s not one I watch, TD. In fact, there’s very little on TV that I care to view these days. I think that’s a combination of a shortage of time and a desire to read more books!
