Around and around the house the leaves fall thick—but never fast, for they come circling down with a dead lightness that is sombre and slow. Let the gardener sweep and sweep the turf as he will, and press the leaves into full barrows, and wheel them off, still they lie ankle-deep. ~Charles Dickens, English novelist, journalist, and social critic, from Bleak House

What a perfect autumn photo! That clear space in the center suggests someone was turning around and around, the better to admire the fallen leaves. Dickens aside, there’s nothing bleak about this image!
Thank you, Linda. No, “someone” was doing zoomies all over the back yard and managed to clear a spot, probably for a quick catch-your-breath before starting again. This autumn weather seems to invigorate him!
Monkey should learn how to use a rake! I wanted to stop by to say hello. Meanwhile, I hope all is well with you.
Frank, I’ve missed you and am delighted you stopped by! Yes, my friend, the Monk needs to be trained in the use of a rake. That would be a good place for him to work off some of his energy … and then I’d have a clean yard!!
Thank you, Debbie for the kind words. I’m touched. Looking back, stepping away was the right decision for me. But I still like to pop-in at places now and then. 🙂
And I’m more than delighted whenever you pop in here, Frank!
😃
Happy Wednesday, my friend! LOVE the photo! LOVE the words!
We finally got hit with a very intense cold-front, which is starting to turn our leaves Autumn colors. Yipppeeeeee!
X to you and The Monk
Ron, I’m honored you stopped by to comment — thank you! I’ve missed you, my friend, and it’s always good hearing from you. You’re finally getting some cooling weather?? Fabulous! I know how much you love this time of year. I hope you’ve got your soup-pot simmering and some nice hot chocolate in a big mug!! XX
Hey Monkey! Do you like playing in the leaves as much as Penny does? Well, she doesn’t actually PLAY, but she likes to walk in the leaves and sniff a lot.
Autumn seems ideal for the Monk, Dawn. He loves the cooler weather, and those leaves? Well, let’s just say there must be all kinds of interesting smells underneath them. Here, he was kind of mid-zoomie (hence, the clearing spot).
A terrific photo, Debbie. Love the Dickens excerpt.
Thanks so much, John. And thanks especially for dropping by on your “day off!” Give the girls a hug from me!
It’s a wonderful photo of Monkey! I love the quote, too, because I’m currently reading Bleak House!
Thanks, Kelly. I hope you’re enjoying your read. I haven’t tackled Bleak House yet, but FF has twisted my arm to try Dickens at Christmastime, so maybe I’ll give it a go!
I’m only 25% in (it’s really long!), but I’m enjoying it so far. I would recommend Nicholas Nickleby!
I’ve seen that one at our library, along with David Copperfield and Great Expectations. Thanks for the recommendation!
Camo-dog! 😉
I see leaves and I think lawn-food, where’s my mower? 😀
I don’t rake leaves either, Eliza — mulching is a much better option. Our community banned leaf-burning years ago (thank goodness!), and those bulky, cumbersome bagged leaves left curbside for the city to haul off are a nuisance.
Dickens, Monkey and fallen leaves – three of my favourite things! And I can’t help eavesdropping on you and Kelly – I hope you enjoy Dickens at Christmas if you do go for it! 😀
Eavesdrop any time, FF — I’m sure Kelly wouldn’t mind either! Dickens at Christmastime just might be a “go” this year. I’ve already hit my reading target, so tackling a massive tome just might prove worthwhile. Keep your fingers crossed for me!
I certainly will! 😀
Aw, Monkey looks so cute in those leaves!
Thanks much, Ann. He did have a blast zooming around the yard — and brought in enough leaves on his furry bottom to strew around the house!
