Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us, or we find it not. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson, American essayist, philosopher, poet
It’s
A nice
Surprise when
You’re shoveling
Snow outside, look up,
And see a tree outlined
With frosting on its branches.
Only Mother Nature can make
Such a beautiful, decorated
Work of art from a leafless maple tree.
Note: Poetry form is Etheree. Snow was from December (it’s in the 50s this week!)

Snow-lined branches are one of my favorite parts of winter, so pretty! ❄️ 💙
Thank you, Eliza. I’m glad you liked it!
This really is beautiful, and you captured it so well in your etheree. The last time we had snow (in January of last year) there was enough to coat limbs and shrubs, and it excited everyone no end. What you’ve shown in your photo’s what I like to call a ‘civilized’ snow: enough to make things pretty, but not enough to shut down a city.
You probably can’t tell from the picture, but we’d gotten nearly four inches of the white stuff. Yes, it was pretty, but shoveling a long driveway of that much heavy, wet snow isn’t a piece of cake (though you’re right — it didn’t shut down the city!)
Snowy branches against a winter blue sky are the best.
Oh, yes, and I remember that beautiful blue sky — but mostly, I remember the sunshine that made everything sparkle!
So true! I love the look of bare trees in the winter. Reminds me that all year long, trees are beautiful.
Thank you, Laurie. I agree: in every season, trees are spectacular!
Debbie, dear friend, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this post for three reason –
1) Your post title AND the Emerson quote. So true!
2) Your stunning photograph! It’s a perfect example of why I find winter so beautiful.
3) You poem – “Only Mother Nature can make
Such a beautiful, decorated
Work of art from a leafless maple tree.” – A-men!
Thanks so much for sharing this today. Very much enjoyed! And yes, same here, it’s going to be in the 50s this week. I think for three days, starting tomorrow.
Have a fab week! X
Ron, I’m so happy you liked this one (and I appreciate your dropping by to tell me so!)
We’ve had a couple of really pleasant days this week, where the Monk and I were able to get outdoors and take a walk. I think the old-timers used to refer to a spell like this as “January thaw.” The snow pictured here has since melted, and I’m loving this taste of early Spring.
Still, I know winter’s not through with us, and it’s going to hurt when all that cold and snow return. Sigh.
Enjoy your week, my friend! XX
What a gorgeous photo! The poem describes it well.
Thank you, Kelly. I’m glad you liked it!
Yes only Mother Nature can make such beautiful art. You made the lovely poem and photo, though. Thanks, Debbie.
Aw, John, you’re making me blush. Thanks so much for the lovely compliment.
Love your poem and the pic! We’ve been having snow warnings for the last two days but so far there hasn’t been enough to make a decent snowball. I’ve stocked up with chocolate though, just in case…
Excellent plan! We had quite a bit of snow early on, but today, we’re awaiting bucketloads of rain, mixed with possible thunderstorms. Crazy weather, indeed. I’m happy you liked my snow tree though.
