A Trio of Verses

Put all your faith in poets. You will find few others to share Beauty with you; and it cannot be borne alone. ~Christopher Morley, American journalist, novelist, essayist, and poet

The Toad:

There once was a toad so black
With warts upon his back
He hopped around
With nary a sound
Looking for something to snack.

The Cicada:

Cicadas seem to have vanished
Into the sunset, or wherever they go,
Crawling deep into the earth’s underground
And hibernating for several decades.
Don’t worry, they’ll be back eventually
And announce their presence with loud fanfare!

The Stag Beetle:

When

I was

Out walking

The Monk, we saw

This immense beetle

Chilling on the sidewalk.

I stopped to get his picture.

Shivering at getting too close

To his wicked pincers and finding

Myself captured by those strong mandibles.

Note: First poem is a Limerick; second is Acrostic; third is Etheree.

Delicate Strength

The spiders with their pot-bellied bodies and beady eyes, are not beauteous objects, but a spider-web in the sunshine with dew upon it, is one of the loveliest things in the world. ~Dorothy Scarborough, American writer

Sparkling drops of water

Play upon her handiwork.

Inconceivable, isn’t it, that

Dew can magnify beauty

Even for such a short while?

Rare is the person on earth

Who can appreciate the weaver

Every bit as much as the creation

By which she’s famously known.

Note: This is an Acrostic poem. You got the message, right?

A Blushing Sunrise

Sunrise Nov. 2, 2016, 7:12 a.m., Central Illinois

Blessed to be alive

Enjoying a spectacular sunrise

Giving thanks to the Creator

In all ways bounteous and wise.

New beginning, new day

New shades of pink and gray

In the heavens a feast

Never tire of the splendor

Glorious gobstoppers of color

Sticking around for mere seconds.

Note: This is my take on Rise/Set, WordPress’s Photo Challenge for the week. We’re supposed to feature either a sunrise or a sunset, trying to show what that time of day means to us. I’ll be taking a few days off to celebrate the upcoming holiday — Happy Easter, my friends!
