Spring 2023

This is the sensory season. Trees are in leaf… It is a green world… Walk through an orchard and you can smell as well as feel the strength of grass underfoot, new grass reaching tall toward the sun. Boughs naked only a little while ago, then bright and heady with bloom, now rustle with leaf and tingle with the strength of fruition. Listen, and you can almost hear the pulse of sap and the mysterious workings of chlorophyll. The air vibrates with bird song… All the senses tingle, alive with the season as the world itself is alive. Nothing is impossible at such a time. ~Hal Borland, American writer, journalist, and naturalist

Happy Spring, my friends! I’m taking a few days off — see you after Easter!

Tangible Affirmations

Never deprive someone of hope — it may be all they have. ~Author unknown

Recently, it occurred to me that, rather than suffer through negative feelings over the lack of a puppy in my life, I needed to do something positive to prepare the way for a new wee one to arrive.

An affirmation, if you will.

So I went to the store and purchased these:

A Fresh Start

Hope is the physician of each misery. ~Irish Proverb

We kick off new years with hope in our hearts,
Promising ourselves this one will be fine.
But always there remain the unseen darts
From the previous year that made us whine.
Shrug off past misery; try a new line;
This is the time for a fresh burst of hope!
We’ve more than shown that we’re able to cope.
As new growth springs from the cold ground below,
Don’t look for someone to throw you a rope.
You can do this. Just go with what you know.

Note: Happy 2021! This poetry form is Dizain, a style 15th and 16th Century French poets were fond of. It consists of one 10-line stanza, with 10 syllables per line in an ababbccdcd rhyming scheme.

Clouds

You must not blame me if I do talk to the clouds. ~Henry David Thoreau, American essayist

Don’t give up the ship

You’ll find your place in the world

These things just take time.

Note: The theme for this week’s WordPress Photo Challenge is your Place in the World. “Where do you belong?” is the question we’re supposed to interpret. I’m finding this one hard. There are many places that call to me, and I’m often accused of having my head in the clouds! I took this shot in July 2015.

Discouraged, Not Defeated

Hope is putting faith to work when doubting would be easier. ~Author Unknown

You were meant to stand out,
Blessed with a beauty unbounded.
Destined to sparkle, to astonish,
To share your uniqueness with the world.

Yet here you stand
Buffeted by gale-force winds of change,
Assaulted by frosty words of criticism,
Struggling to find the sun beneath clouds of doubt.

Yet here you stand
Having shed your pearls of wisdom,
Seen them tossed thoughtlessly away
In favor of louder, more confident voices.

Yet here you stand
Still trying to triumph
Still hoping to claim your place
And recapture bits of past magic.

Yet here you stand
Discouraged, but not defeated.

Note: April is National Poetry Month. While poetry as an art form probably should be celebrated every month, perhaps it’s a start to set aside 30 days to recognize poets and their works.

Hope

Mired in darkness,
Gasping for air,
Overpowering tremors,
Haunting memories.
When will it end?

Restless sleep,
Relentless nightmares.
No peace by day,
No calm at night.
Bone-weary exhaustion.

A point of light appears
Far in the distance,
A beacon of hope
Is glimmering.
Hard to stay blue forever.

Taking baby steps
Toward normalcy.
Learning to trust
Through sheer willpower.
Don’t hurt me again.
